The fate of South American Clasico took a new turn as football’s governing body FIFA decided to open disciplinary proceedings after a crowd turmoil marred Argentina’s victory over arch rivals Brazil. Nicolas Otamendi was the star of the game as he scored a towering header to secure a convincing victory at the iconic Marcana stadium.

Brazil versus Argentina- an intense clash
There are several intense clashes between two sides which have been etched in the history books forever. Some of them include Brazil versus Argentina, Spain versus Portugal- but none of the games match the excitement and intensity levels of the South American rivalry- Brazil versus Argentina. Termed as South American Clasico, both of these nations have been involved in several nail-biting clashes, which even include the final of 2021 Copa America, where Argentina’s clutch player Angel Di Maria scored the winner, ending Argentine stalwart Lionel Messi’s trophy drought. But, this time, in FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers, staged in the iconic Maracanã, both of these sides were involved in a bloody clash involving Brazilian locals and Argentine fans, which even bought Brazilian authorities to play, who were seen hurling their batons at people.

The match was halted for more than 20 minutes, which prompted Lionel Messi and Co. to walk away the field, hoping to come back after an end to this turmoil, which “could have been a tragedy”, as explained by the Argentine captain, in his post-match interview.

One clash which none wants to remember
The battle started when National Anthems were played out inside the Arena, when supporters from both sides were seen exchanging fights, which further brought Brazilian authorities to action, which prompted a state of hell within the stadium. Police was seen charging at Argentines with baton, and as a response to which, Albiceleste supporters were hurling chairs at the authorities, to protect their safety. Lionel Messi and his riled up brigade was seen approaching the place where these battles were going on, as Aston Villa custodian Emi Martinez was seen charging at a sergeant to grab the baton, which would further stop them from further beating.

Damn.

After resumption, Argentina eventually followed up with a glorious victory at the hostile Maracana, which they did after two years of winning Copa America. Nicolas Otamendi was the hero of the game, after nodding a inch perfect header from Lo Celso’s corner towards far post, beating Alisson who had nothing to save.

According to latest reports, it is known that Brazil is facing sanctions for “potential breach of Article 17” of FIFA’s disciplinary code, whereas their counterparts Argentina would be on the brink of facing disciplinary action for “delayed kickoff” and “crowd disturbance”. FIFA released an official statement which read, “FIFA can confirm that its Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Brazilian Football Association (CBF) and the Argentinian Football Association (AFA).”
