On the day the Bombay High Court took notice of the deteriorating air quality in Mumbai and initiated suo motu proceedings, the Indian cricket board declared that there will be no fireworks display during the World Cup matches in Mumbai and Delhi, citing concerns about adding to pollution levels.

As India prepares to face South Africa at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are set to meet at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium next Monday.

In response to a query from The Indian Express, BCCI secretary Jay Shah stated, “I formally addressed this matter with the ICC, and there will be no fireworks display in Mumbai and Delhi to prevent any potential contribution to air pollution. The Board is dedicated to addressing environmental issues and always prioritizes the interests of our fans and stakeholders.”

Shah emphasized the board’s sensitivity to environmental issues and expressed the BCCI’s recognition of the urgent concern regarding air quality in both Mumbai and New Delhi. He reaffirmed their commitment to hosting the ICC World Cup in a manner that befits the celebration of cricket while steadfastly prioritizing the health and safety of all stakeholders.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) reading in Mumbai on Tuesday was categorized as “moderate” at 172, with the Bandra Kurla Complex area registering an alarming high of 260. In Delhi, air quality for October has reached its worst level since 2020.

A senior BCCI official emphasized that by making the World Cup matches in Mumbai and Delhi fireworks-free, the cricket board is making a powerful statement for the benefit of public interest. This move is seen as a means to raise environmental awareness among citizens and set an example, contributing to a significant societal change.
