Bangladesh scripted a historic chapter in their cricketing journey as they claimed a remarkable five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first T20I of the three-match series in Napier. This triumph marks Bangladesh’s first-ever Twenty20 win on New Zealand soil, following their recent maiden away one-day international victory over the Black Caps in the same venue.
Disastrous Start for New Zealand
Facing a challenging task after being asked to bat by Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, New Zealand endured a disastrous start, losing three wickets before managing to reach a modest total of 134 for nine in their allotted 20 overs.
Bangladesh’s seamers carried forward the momentum from their previous performance, where they dismissed New Zealand for just 98 runs in the third one-day international. Hasan, opening the bowling attack, made an impact by bowling out Tim Seifert in the very first over. Shoriful Islam emerged as the standout bowler for Bangladesh, claiming three crucial wickets for 26 runs, including the dismissals of Finn Allen and Glenn Phillips in consecutive deliveries.

Neesham’s Heroics and Late Flourish
New Zealand faced a batting collapse as Daryl Mitchell, Mark Chapman, and others struggled to make an impact. Mitchell’s brief innings of 14 ended with consecutive fours, leaving New Zealand at a precarious 20-4. Captain Mitchell Santner and James Neesham tried to stabilize the innings with a 41-run partnership, but Sarkar’s fielding brilliance, including two catches, halted their progress.
James Neesham played a valiant knock, falling just two runs short of his half-century before getting caught out at deep cover point. Southee’s dismissal and Adam Milne’s unbeaten 16 off the final ball concluded New Zealand’s innings, marked by a towering six.
In response, Bangladesh’s batters displayed patience and composure as they chipped away at New Zealand’s total. Despite facing some early setbacks with the dismissals of Rony Talukdar and Shanto, Bangladesh steadily built their innings.
