Jay Shah, the newly elected chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), has arrived in Brisbane. Sources confirmed to Cricbuzz that the former secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) landed in the Australian city a few hours ago on a Singapore Airlines flight.
Shah is accompanied by Devajit Saikia, the BCCI joint secretary, who has also been entrusted with the powers of secretary after Shah relinquished the position last week. Both Shah and Saikia have checked into Hotel Sofitel, where the Indian team is staying. It is understood that Shah will attend a meeting related to the Olympics. Brisbane will be hosting the Olympic Games in 2032 and cricket is expected to be part of the Games.
Additionally, he will have the opportunity to watch the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test, which starts at the Gabba on December 14.
The timing and significance of Shah's visit to Australia cannot be overstated. The ICC is currently grappling with the issue of the Champions Trophy, and Cricket Australia (CA) has been one of the strongest supporters of the BCCI's position. While Shah now holds an independent position at the ICC, his influence over the BCCI, which he headed until last week, cannot be overlooked. Saikia's presence with him further strengthens the point.
Shah was invited by the CA and New South Wales (NSW) Cricket for the Sydney Test, starting January 3, 2025. It was expected that the new ICC chairman had agreed to honour the invite but it is not clear how his current visit to Australia will impact that programme
