The first season of Daredevil: Born Again has come to a close, and fans have been shocked by the levels of violence of the finale.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe series is a revival and continuation of Daredevil, which ran for three seasons from 2015 to 2018, and the ninth and final episode of Born Again aired on Disney+ on Tuesday (April 15),

The show sees Charlie Cox reprise his role of Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, a blind lawyer who masquerades as a vigilante at night. Vincent D’Onofrio, Margarita Levieva, Deborah Ann Wolf and Jon Bernthal co-star.

The penultimate episode in the season proved to be a shocker for many fans, with Daredevil taking a bullet for one of his foes, D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin.

The final episode proved to be no less shocking, with one scene in which Kingpin graphically kills Police Commissioner Gallo (Michael Gaston) by crushing his skull with his bare hands.

One X user commented that despite Marvel warning viewers that the season would not pull its punches, it was still a surprisingly extreme turn of events. “I thought they were lying when they said “yeah we didn’t hold back”,” they wrote. “First time marvel executives didn’t lie about violence.”

Daredevil: Born Again landed a five-star review from NME, with Ali Shutler writing that it “does a brilliant job of embedding itself into that shared universe. Events from across the MCU are naturally referenced and there are also a few tantalising teases about what comes next. Thankfully, a second season is already in the works. None of that distracts from a tightly wound plot that makes space for emotional growth and more than a few big swings. Nostalgia be damned.”

The second season of Daredevil: Born Again has been confirmed by Marvel, with the eight-episode season set to premiere in early-to-mid 2026. A spin-off season revolving around Bernthal’s Punisher character has also been commissioned. Both season will be part of Phase Six of the MCU.

Bernthal recently revealed that he initially turned down the offer to play Punisher. “Ultimately, I didn’t see it,” he said. “I didn’t see the version of Frank, and what they wanted from Frank [didn’t] really make sense to me and I thought would not appeal to the fans and wouldn’t be congruent. It was not something I was really interested in doing. So we had to walk away.”
